I live near Adelaide, public transport is usually pretty decent, but sometimes buses run late, and things ike that - they are also pretty packed in the peak hours.
Adelaide is pretty boring, we don't have great shopping or activities. The museum is probably one of the most exciting things! How sad..
Entertainment is basic, movies, clubs whatever is all there - but nothing special. Brisbane would have all that Adelaide has, and loads more. Adelaide Entertainment centre has big singers come to perform.. but so would Brisbane! lol!
Adelaide Uni is pretty good, I visited it the other day, it's a good campus, lots of opportunities, good facilities, and a nice area to be in.
You said you were going to study journalism - you may be interested in volunteering at Radio Adelaide, it's community radio sponsored by the uni. I mean, it's better for students in media, but they may have opportunities for journalism too.
I have never lived in Brisbane, but I would probably go there instead of Adelaide… apply to both uni's though, and if you only get accepted to one - you won't have to decide.
Brisbane would be more fun though, if you are an outgoing person - go there, if you are quiet or shy, maybe Adelaide would be better? If you like the beach, suna nd surf Brisbane is great because it's near the goldcoast and has good beaches etc.
Good luck, hope this helps! =] References :
Which city is the best? Well that’s ultimately up to one’s personal choice, I personally feel Adelaide is a more cultured place than Brisbane, and easier to get around, and it has a lower crime rate, and lower cost of living than Brisbane. I would imagine, public transport, entertainment and recreation activities are pretty much the same. Adelaide University is in a prime city location, with very close access to the best the city has to offer, and transport as well. Adelaide as a city, is a great place to live, and has a laid back quality pace of life, and far from boring (unless you are a boring person). In Adelaide the Entertainment & arts are plentiful, great inexpensive food, café’s, heaps to do especially in Summer and Autumn, ease of accessibility which is a bonus to getaway to locations like the many small towns / villages in the surrounding hills, the nation’s best wine regions and the beaches (Adelaide’s metropolitan area has over 30KM’s of beaches, with wide beaches with calm waters in the far Northern costal historical suburbs, to the beautiful cliff lined beaches in the Southern suburbs, that have their own family and surf culture, with cosmopolitan Glenelg beach lying somewhere in the middle, which boasts countless, bars, restaurants, hotels (of international standards) and a marina), which makes the city pretty special. The climate's pretty good though not much rain, and can get pretty hot in late summer. Adelaide has less rainy days than Brisbane on average per year, and Adelaide has more sunshine per day than Brisbane from November through to the end of March. Adelaide averages 10 hours a day of sunshine throughout summer, Brisbane 8.3hours. As far as a place to live, I reckon the eastern, south eastern, south western and beach side suburbs are the pick of the suburbs to live in, like all cities you’ll pay more in better suburbs.
I have included some great links giving a comprehensive rundown comparison of the Australian cities (below), also 2 links from a British emigration site, giving an overview of moving to and living in Adelaide.
.
(By the way I have been to both cities, so no guess work here. Re A’s baseless comment “Brisbane is great because ………. and has good beaches etc” Please do yourself a favour and get onto Google Earth and check out who has the best beaches, it’s Adelaide hands down! Brisbane has mud flaps, except for an outer north eastern suburb called Redcliffe which has about as much surf as my bath tub. As far as Livable Cities, both the highly prestigious "The Economist" magazine's "world's most livable cities" index and Mercers Quality living survey, both rank Adelaide higher than Brisbane in regards to livability / quality of living; and for good reason.)
Brisbane has won the title of “most liveable city in Australia” many times. It is the capital of Queensland, home to many popular tourist destinations including the great barrier reef, the outback, and the sunshine and gold coasts.
And we are within an hours drive of BOTH the gold and sunshine coasts (gold coast is south of brisbane, sunshine coast is north of brisbane), which are the homes to Australia Zoo, Dreamworld, Seaworld and movie world!!!
We have it all, a wonderful climate, great beaches, rainforests, lots of activities.
The public transport is improving, with a fantastic train and bus network, and if you are lucky enough to live near the river, you can catch the city cat.
If you like your wine, you may want to consider Adelaide, but we even have a fantastic winary within 20 minutes of the city, so brisbane wins there too!!!

Brisbane, Adelaide is called the city of churches for a reason - it's boring!
Brisbane have a bus service, better night life and is only a short travel from the Gold Coast.
