Hi , from what you are looking for and as a former resident of Brisbane. You need to look for places around the city or valley. Anywhere from Spring Hill to Paddigton. This will suffice your live music and younger crowd. But unfortunetly no beach or ocean. If you drive to the Gold coast or Sunshine coast - the beaches are beautiful. Hope this helps

Heres some hip places to live in Brisbane -

      New Farm : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/living/suburbs/new_farm/home/
      Paddington : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/living/suburbs/paddington/home/
      Kangaroo Point : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/living/suburbs/kangaroo_point/home/
      West End : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/living/suburbs/west_end/home/
      Fortitude Valley : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/living/suburbs/fortitude_valley/home/

The nightlife in "The Valley" is pretty good, If you want to put your dancing shoes on then I recommend you check out the Family and The Beat or head to The Monastery to check out some live bands, These places have a cover charge of around $10. Free before 8 or 10pm.

If your tight for cash you can go to The Mustang Bar after 5 on a Friday and grab a $3 Jug of Tooheys New or head to the Casino and have some $3 Daiquiris. lol

Other places to see in the Valley : http://www.ourbrisbane.com/whatson/gig/valley-music/index.htm

You would probrobly want to live some where close to your place of employment until you familiarise yourself with Brisbane. Having said that the BEST place to live (in my opinion) is on Brisbanes Bayside, Hardly "hip" but the people are friendly, The local pub (The Manly Hotel) is a great place to meet people and If they bore you shitless then your a 5 minute walk to the train station and a 40 minute train ride to The Valley! Best of both worlds I say…

as the others said - inner city apt. living is probably for you. west end is kind of down at the heels, lots of ethnic cafes, south brisbane is along the river as well - great bikeways along the river & southbank parklands with its artificial pools. you would probably enjoy living in teneriffe/new farm area along the river - close to everything.
you may also want to take a look at the new Kelvin Grove urban village.
you didn't say where your business would be located. ideally you should live within a 20 min drive of work - traffic problems are horrendous - even the buses and trains are overfull during peak work/travel hours.
