That depends a lot on where and what lifestyle in the UK you're comparing it to.

Petrol and cars are cheaper here; you don't need heating for months every year; food is cheaper if you take care where you shop; dining out is cheaper; cheap clothing is cheaper but top quality stuff is more expensive; electronic goods are about the same on average; non food groceries and personal items are generally more expensive.

Housing in the outer suburbs is cheaper and larger than in many (but not all) places in the UK, but inner city housing can be very expensive and it depends on you've come from when comparing prices.

Overall, it's probably a bit less expensive in Brisbane but wait until you've spent a winter here. Then you'll say that it wouldn't matter if Brisbane cost twice as much, it would still be worth it.

We have a friend who lives in Brisbane now who is originally from the UK and he says that it is so much better and cheaper over here. He said he would never ever move back.

I have lived in both Brisbane and London. Generally Brisbane is cheaper, but it depends on your circumstances. You could live in a very expensive place in Brisbane, or a cheap bedsit in the UK. Food is generally cheaper in Brisbane, but there's more variety at regular supermarkets in the UK. House prices are generally cheaper in Brisbane, if you compare places by size, you get more for your money in Brisbane.

brisbane is MUCH cheaper than the UK (especially London). Housing prices don't compare and most things are cheaper. It may not be quite as noticable as it was a year or so ago though because whilst the dollar has dropped recently, the pound has dropped more. Still, your money will go further in Brisbane.

compared to the UK Brisbane is much cheaper. Although once you are here and earning AUD you'll adjust. I think fuel is a little cheaper, clothing is cheaper, but cosmetics and other imported luxuries are more expensive. You'll miss Boots! It's not like we don't have large chemists, but Boots is wonderful. I disagree that our supermarkets have less variety. There'll be things you won't find here - like entire aisles of bloody digestives!! but there'll be other things we do have.

Real Estate is a whole other question. Of course housing is cheaper the further out you go, but you have to spend more time and money getting back in to go to any good places. Where you live, like anywhere, will impact on your experience here. So, cheaper to buy in the outer suburbs, but capital growth much lower. It also depends on what "type" of suburb you want to live in, and/or what you can afford. The market is still holding steady here, we are the fastest growing region in Australia so have managed to not be knocked about too much by the global "credit crisis", despite what the media is saying…

what can I say? you'll love it here. You'll laugh as you watch us shiver through "winter", you'll whinge as we smile through summer. I adore the UK but when it comes to lifestyle we've got you beat. I hope you love it here. :)
