nelson at the top of the south island and the marlborough region (also top of the south island), followed by hawkes bay in the north island have the most sunshine hours per year so very pleasant climate wise. Also the Bay of plenty in the North island has a pretty decent climate, i used to live in a beautiful town called Whakatane and the summers up there are alot muggier than down in the south island where i now live.
nowhere will be as hot all the time as the gold coast but thats a good thing!!

I am looking for a smart, safe area - no need for family facilties

For a great aussie area try Mt Druitt, Rooty Hill, in Sydneys fabulous western suburbs. The great Aussie battlers live there. Very community minded, lots of kids, primered half finished monaro's. Social security offices and luxurious affordable housing built in cute little townhouse complexes. The real australia. Conservative Liberal voters need not apply.

We are looking to emigrate from the UK and dont know the good areas. Looking for suburbs with land or coastal.

Sydney is a city of four million people and covers a large area. Many places could be suitable for you and there are good schools everywhere. It really depends on where you are working and how you are going to get to work. The Central Coast has much to offer but not if you are working in Sutherland. Public transport in Sydney is, for the most part, radial. Most of it goes to the city. Consequently if you were living in the eastern suburbs ( a great area) and working near Macquarie University, getting there by public transport would take three buses or two buses and a train.

If you want land, the standard quarter acre block starts some distance out from the older settled areas. The blocks are smaller in the older areas. If you want more than a quarter acre, you will be buying two blocks. With the price of land in Sydney you will need to be well out of the city to find it even if you can afford it. This is where the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains become options. If you want a large block near the coast near the city, start at a couple of million dollars and go up from there.

Take your time. Find out where you will be working and look at renting near there to start with. Then explore and look for what you want. You can see what is available all over Sydney with prices in the Real Estate section of the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturdays http://www.smh.com.au

I am getting an Australian visa and my medical is tomorrow. I was wondering whether being overweight was a big deal. Thanks

If you are morbidly obese or have other issues, you may have a problem. However, if you live in Eastern Africa you could always bribe the doctor, even if your x-ray shows you have tuberculosis. If you are a white euro you have a big problem.
