  • I am going to be a graduate student at the University of Sydney starting in July. Does anyone know which areas of the city I should start to look at for accommodation? Do most students share apartments in on or off campus accommodation? Thanks!!!
Thanks for your answers is Glebe a good choice?

    It depends on your budget.

I used to sub-lease my Enmore house to students, it was popular because its slightly cheaper than Newtown/Camperdown & you tend to get more for your $$.

Glebe is another option, with many share leases advertised. Nth Newtown is becoming a bit too expensive for students.

If you choose a place closer to the uni, you can save in public transport costs, which may give you a few more $$ to spend on the actual accomodation.

There is also the option of UniLodge, I am not sure of the cost & I think it is aimed for overseas cashed up students.

Good luck with finding a place, the rental market is a bit difficult to deal with at the moment because there is a shortage of realistically priced properties.

Oh, I forgot.. another option is to have at look at a website called expatriates.com, you may find something thru there. Ive used them while going O/S & also to lease my place.. very good website.

  • I need too have the smallest one possible. This is legal right?

I am in the US, so as far as laws and such, I do not know. But as far as the care and size? I can help and so can this website http://turtleexchange.smfforfree.com . Ok, the turtle that will probably stay the smallest is a musk turtle. You will need a tank (about 40 gallon woudl be good), water, basking lamp, uva/uvb bulb for daytime lighting, possibly a heater, depending on how cool it gets in your home. The website/message board above can give you much more information. Good Luck! :)

  • where to live in sydney if you want to start surfing? no to far from macquarie university and near where the party is …

    Hi,
The Sydney Northern Beaches are by far the best beaches to surf at. Plus they are the closest to Macquarie University.

If you don't already know how to surf, you can learn with Manly Surf School.
    http://www.manlysurfschool.com/

These are a list of beaches with Web Cam from the coastal watch site and you can also get surf reports and surf forecasts.
    Shelly beach Palm
    Beach Mona Vale
    Nth Narrabeen
    DeeWhy
    Manly
    Sydney Harbour
    Bondi
    Maroubra
    Cronulla
    Wollongong
    Shoalhaven

Macquarie University is in North Ryde and its west of the beaches and its around 45 minutes to 1 hour drive to get there.

If you plan on living near the ocean your best choice suburb would be Mona Vale. All you do is drive west on Mona Vale Road as it passes under the Pacific Hwy it changes to Ryde Road and it takes you though North Ryde, then take the University turn off.

  • We're looking for a happy town where we can bring up a young family. We'd like to live within a short drive of the main town, but on an acreage of about 100ac. There'd need to be decent schools and a good vibe in the community. North, South or West of Sydney are all fine - but where's a nice place within 4 hours to call home? Our criteria would include a town that has a vibrant business or tourism body, and one that is open enough to welcome a new family….not so small that you know every single person, but not so large that it has no personality. We'd like a place with relatively low unemployment and social issues… Any ideas? Does such a place exist?

I really like Gulgong, its not too far from Bathurst but then again, Bathurst is fine too.

    I hope these links help.

    regards

    Jimmy

  • I'm from America and I'm planning to study abroad at the University of Sydney and I want to get an apartment but is Sydney a safe place for a young girl (age 20) to live? It is safe to walk alone at and night?

Yes, Sydney is safe but I would not recommend walking alone in unlit areas in certain places at night. Sydney University will always have a lot of students milling about, especially around King St Newtown and Glebe till late at night. There will usually be someone at the bus stop. If you are getting the train from Redfern Station though be very cautious. Try to live around Newtown, Glebe, Erskinville, McDonaldtown, Enmore, Camperdown or Annandale. These are all easy to get to Uni by public transport and are reasonably safe (and fun) places to live. Good Luck!

Moving to Sydney and looking for an area with a nice feel, preferrably some good cafes and villagey feel. Looking for a commute of no more than 30 -40 minutes. Happy to ride to work if there is a decent (not too dangerous) cycle route. THinking Eastern suburbs or inner west. Keen to understand what public transport is available to get to work and how long it takes. Not really interested in ferry unless there is also another road option for when ferries stop running in the evenings. Looking forward to your advice!

Annandale is a good spot to live in, its not an overly large suburb, has good public transport (especially if you are close to Parramatta Rd). It does have a villagey feel about it and if you go towards the city you will find a new complex of very hip apartments in the old children's hospital site.. complete with parking, restaurants, café, minimart & internal parks.

There are some lovely cafés, 2 nice pubs, little boutique shops, supermarket, hardware stores, plant nursery, pre-school & primary school, its pretty to walk around & close to lots of things (supermarkets & Norton St).. its approx 15 mins from Central station.

Glebe is another nice place, excellent transport, Saturday markets & stacks of shops, restaurants & cafés. Rent is probably the same as Annandale and its a bit more hippyish/student orientated. There is also a large portion of Glebe that is government housing. Transport takes approx 5-10 mins to Central, depending on what part of Glebe you live in, buses are extremely regular.

North Newtown is great, again excellent transport, close to university, restaurants, shops, major hospital & just about any convenience needed but its not a villagey type of atmosphere. Its part of a predominant gay & lesbian community as well as many students, young families.

Inner West is the way to go.. I have lived in all 3 suburbs mentioned for extended periods as well as the Eastern suburbs (which I didnt like & didn't feel settled even after 15yrs). I found the Eastern suburbs too racist for my liking.

Another point about living close to the beaches is the transport issue.. its a nightmare at peaktime if you rely on buses only. Winter in a beachside suburb is miserable & borning & you have to contend with tourists as soon as the sun shines :-)))

Good luck with your move to Sydney, its an amazing city thats always buzzing.
