I have a daughter living in the Wellington Point, Brisbane area and would also like to find independent accomodation in that area. I am an honest and respectable lady with a great love of the outdoors and animals.
Go to www.rsvp.com.au - its for all ages.
My cousin who is 69 and lives on the sunshine coast has found 8 new lady friends (just freinds !) through this site.
It is a dating site but ALSO for friendship and pen pals.
You can search listings already there online - or start your own profile.
Good luck with the move!

My husband, me and our two children aged 2 and 3 years old are migrating from the u.k to Australia next year.
My husband is a motor mechanic and I am a full time mummy!
At the moment we are totally confused about were to live, our two favourites are Brisbane and Perth but we just can't decide.
We would like to be near schools, shops, public transport and preferably a beach!
Any information about Perth and Brisbane and which is best to live in would be greatly appreciated.
And also information on the best Suburbs to live in.
Thanks
Well, I live in Perth, and I'd have to say go for Brisbane. Perth is ok if you want to be bored out of your mind half the time!!

Will be working in Fortitude Valley, would like something modern but not a high rise building… good shops, bars, cafe's etc…
Thanks!
I'd also look at Wilston, Windsor or Lutwyche.
Wilston has a cute little cafe area, Windsor and Lutwyche have shops and bars. All are close to the Valley and access to public transport.

I wnt to study and live in brisbane. do you know how it is? iv been but i dnt know wat its lyc to live there. is it boring and is there stuff to do? is it boring or fun? how clean is it? any information is fine. i was also wandering if the health system was good like the hospitals n stuff. tnx sooo much
xx
if you are an international student - it has the best education standards.
brisbane area has over one million people & is very spread out so you want to live near a school, near good public transport ie trains/buses/water ferry.
health system is very good - especially if you have private medical cover.
clean? well the air is getting smoggy, roads are clogged with traffic am/pm rush hour is slow hour.
streets are clean, people are friendly,
climate - hot & humid in summer, clear, sunny & cool in winter

I am an American that has secured a one year work visa for Australia. I have a Masters Degree and I am hoping to get a job doing office work. I have narrowed my choices of where to live to Brisbane or Perth. Where do you think I should live? What are the advantages/disadvantages to living in each city? How much does rent cost? Do you need a car?
Hey there!
A city is a city is a city …
BUT …..
One is on the east coast
One is on the west coast
The east coast offers lots of different cities to visit - each easy and cheap to get to by plane
Once you're on the west coast, you're pretty much stuck there because of the high cost of travel from the west to the east
Perth is the city of preference for many who emigrate from the UK
Brisbane is associated with the Gold Coast and the surf beaches, the sun, the sand and very much an 'outdoor living' type of lifestyle.
You could do without a car for a time, particularly until you find your way around.
I find whenever I travel, that trains/buses are really useful - as long as you're not too concerned about timetables! If you're happy to go from point A to point B for tourist activities, trains or buses are great! You get to see so much without concentrating on the traffic rules, other cars, bikes etc. - not to mention cheaper! Petrol is just under $1.50 per litre at the moment!
For rental properties, you can check the newspaper classifieds - always up to date with what's available. To know which suburb to rent in, my suggestion is to try to find somewhere inexpensive first for a week or so, until you find your bearings and discover which suburbs might be the most appropriate. A Youth Hostel or Bed & Breakfast might be a suggestion for where you could stay.

I would like to live and work in Brisbane for about a year. I'm 20 and will be moving alone. I was thinking about going in September 2008. I'd rather not buy a car when i'm there, so to live and work near public transit would be great. I love to party and i'd like to see as many sites as i can while i'm there.
Any suggestions/comments?
I dont know about applying for working visas etc but someone else may be able to help with that area more!
But I think Brisbane is a great place to set as your base! There is public transport available - not as much as some places but it is available! Just make sure you live a close walk to a train station or bus stop.
Depending on your line of work and income may depend on where you should stay and or share accommodation. I would do share so you can save some money to do some traveling whilst you are here. Northern suburbs are more expensive - I would try outer southern suburbs.
Why do I think Brisbane is a great place to base yourself? Because from Brisbane there are so many nice places to visit and go and see. I would make a trip for 3-4 days to Fraser Island just a few hours north of Brisbane - do a tour or you may miss the beautiful spots and only see the dirt tracks and bush! But it isnt to be missed!!! Then theres the Sunshine Coast which has so many lovely places to see and go to and Australia Zoo is there. Then theres the Gold Coast 40min south with so much to do there to! The theme parks (Which at 20 you will still love! I did at 25!). The National Parks on the Gold Coast hinterland and of course the beaches.
You can visit the GC and SC on your weekends easily!
Within weeks of arriving visit Lone Pine a small but nice zoo in Brisbane where you can sit with kangaroos!
However you said you like to party and Sydney and Melbourne are known for that even tho there is a party scene in Brisbane to and or you could try Gold Coast some weekends which is only a short 30/40m trip from South Brisbane which has a huge party scene.
Then at some point - mid year or end make a trip to Cairns and or see the Great Barrier Reef - you may need 4-5 days to do this.
Just google search Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, lots of places ideas and suggestions will come up for all of them!
And if you do come take a flight if you can afford it for one or two weekends to Melbourne and or Sydney! Might as well if you are in Oz!
So yeah the public transport may not be as great as some places but I dont know where you are from and what the transport is like where you are - it may be the same! but you can still certainly get around using buses and trains! There is a public transport system which people use daily for work and life.

I am moving to Brisbane (from Perth) at the end of this year and i was wondering a nice suburb to rent in? Nothing too expensive but just a nice area closeish to the city..any ideas? But i am going to be going to UQ in Ipswitch so is there any nice suburbs inbetween there and the city? Thanks!
The inner Western suburbs are very green and leafy and are very nice places to live. Try Indooroopilly, Taringa, Toowong - all are close to the city (but not close enough to walk) and have the advantage of a train service to Ipswich. They are also very close to UQ at St Lucia, so there is a lot of shared student accomodation if you don't mind sharing with someone from a different campus.
Darra, Redbank Plains, Goodna and Gailes as mentioned in another answer, have the same train service, but are considerably further out of town and leave a lot to be desired in many other ways - though they would be cheaper than the closer in suburbs.
